What Is Meningococcal Disease?
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection transmitted through saliva that can initially appear similar to flu-like illnesses. It can cause two very serious conditions — meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal membranes) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) — both of which can lead to organ damage, permanent disability, deafness, limb loss, or even death.
Around 80% of cases present with a distinctive rash that does not blanch (turn pale or white) when pressed. In New Zealand, the disease is mainly caused by five bacterial groups: A, B, C, W, and Y.
Why Should I Get the Meningococcal Vaccine?
Meningococcal disease is most common in children under 5, teenagers, and young adults, especially those living in close quarters such as university halls, hostels, or boarding schools. The consequences can be severe and fast-moving, which is why vaccination is the best form of protection.
If you or your child is entering a shared living environment for the first time, getting vaccinated before they go is one of the most important steps you can take.
Free Meningococcal Vaccines for Eligible Students
If you're aged 16–25 years old and living in your first year in a close-contact environment (such as a boarding school, hostel, university hall, or military barracks), you may qualify for free meningococcal vaccines at Corner Pharmacy in Mt Roskill.

- MenQuadfi (Meningococcal ACWY) — protects against the A, C, W, and Y serogroups. Requires 1 dose.
For the best protection, it's recommended to get both vaccines in the same visit, given in different arms or sites.
