Treatment for Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Treatment in New Zealand
Think you might have a bladder infection? You're not alone β UTIs are one of the most common conditions affecting Kiwi women. At Corner Pharmacy, our pharmacists can discuss your symptoms privately and provide the right UTI treatment, often without the need to see a doctor.
What Is a UTI?
A urinary tract infection (also called a UTI, bladder infection, or cystitis) is usually caused by E. coli bacteria entering the urethra, causing inflammation in the lining of the urinary tract and bladder. More than half of all women in New Zealand will experience a UTI at some point in their lives. While most common in women, UTIs can also affect men and children.
Common UTI Symptoms
UTI symptoms can include some or all of the following:
- A strong or sudden urge to urinate
- Pain or a burning sensation when urinating
- Needing to go to the toilet frequently
- Passing only small amounts of urine
- Cloudy urine
- Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic region
A UTI is not usually serious, but it can make some people β particularly older adults β quite unwell. If left untreated, a UTI can spread to the kidneys, which requires urgent medical attention.
UTI Antibiotic Treatment Without a Prescription
For uncomplicated UTIs, Corner Pharmacy can supply UTI antibiotic treatment without a prescription. Our pharmacists will work through a thorough checklist with you to confirm the medication is appropriate for your situation.
The UTI antibiotics available are nitrofurantoin and trimethoprim, supplied as a three-day course.
This service is available to women aged 16 to 65 who are not pregnant. Eligibility criteria applies. The consultation is completely confidential and conducted in a private area.
If your symptoms suggest a more serious or recurring infection, we will refer you to a doctor rather than supply antibiotics β your safety always comes first.
Other Ways to Help Manage a UTI
Alongside UTI antibiotics, these self-care strategies can help ease symptoms:
- Drink plenty of water β helps dilute urine and flush out bacteria
- Avoid bladder irritants β limit coffee, alcohol, and citrus juices
- Use a heat pack β a hot water bottle on your lower stomach can ease discomfort
We also stock urinary alkalinisers, which may relieve painful UTI symptoms by reducing urine acidity, as well as probiotics that may help reduce the recurrence of UTIs in women prone to them. Cranberry tablets are another option some people find helpful for UTI prevention, though the evidence is still emerging.
Not Sure If It's a UTI?
Our pharmacists can talk through your symptoms and help determine whether a UTI is likely. We also stock at-home UTI testing kits that provide results from a urine sample in just minutes β ask our team for more information.
